Prom Photo Locations | Princeton, NJ Photographer

Choosing a location for any photography session around Princeton, NJ can be difficult. Sometimes, it could be even more difficult when it comes to prom photos! You want to find a location that is easily accessible, local for you and ALL of your friends, and also has a nice backdrop to complement your lovely outfit… and if the weather is bad, you can’t even reschedule! However, I promise you that all of the planning will be worth it when you see moments of you and your friends all dressed up and excited before the big night.

I often receive questions about locations for prom photography sessions around Princeton, NJ and I have compiled a short list along with some example photos. I hope you and your friends find this post helpful!

Outdoor Sessions

Since I am a natural light photographer, I prefer outdoor photography sessions! Prom photography sessions usually happen in the afternoon when there is still harsh sunlight, so there are limited location options. My goal for an outdoor photography session is to find an open space with good light, and a pretty background is a bonus!

Mercer County Park

Mercer County Park is a great location. My favorite spot is near the Boathouse since the water creates a beautiful backdrop. Sometimes, most of the students from a whole school will meet their friends at the park for pre-prom, so it is important to get to the park early to avoid crowds or find other spaces where there are less people.

Your backyard!

While this might not sound fancy and ideal at first, backyard sessions are a fun and convenient option! Oftentimes everyone is rushing in the hours before prom to get ready, so having a session in your backyard may help save you time and stress. Usually it is best to find an area with less trees to ensure the images are light and bright. If there is open shade created by a building, house, or trees, that is also a bonus!

Around your school

High schools often have open fields which could be another option where there are often little to no crowds. In general, fields across from a school, in the client’s neighborhoods, or in a local park can provide another location option for photos.

Indoor Sessions

Sometimes the weather is not suitable for outdoor sessions. It could be cold, windy, or raining, and in those cases, indoor sessions are a better option. Usually, I like to photograph these sessions in the clients’ home in a room with light, neutral colored walls and lots of windows. We don’t need a lot of space for photos, so even a small corner will be sufficient to capture beautiful images!

In cases where the clients’ home doesn’t have light and bright rooms, I will bring and set up a white backdrop to create a light background for photos.
